Motorhome, campervan or alcove — which type of motorhome to choose?

Differences between motorhome types: campervan, integrated, alcove, caravan. Which suits families, couples or long trips from Bratislava?

Which type of motorhome should you choose?

The world of motorhomes is more varied than most people think. It is not just "caravan" and "motorhome" — there are several different types, each with different advantages, dimensions and target audiences. Let us go through them.

Types of motorhomes

1. Campervan

A classic campervan is built on a van chassis — most commonly VW T6, T7, Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit. It is the most compact type, ideal for couples or solo travellers.

Advantages:

  • Easy to park (same width as a normal car)
  • Low fuel consumption
  • You can take it into town

  • Disadvantages:

  • Limited space (small kitchen, bed, but tight)
  • Not suitable for families with children
  • More limited water and electricity supplies

  • 2. Semi-integrated motorhome

A semi-integrated model is a compromise between a campervan and a fully integrated motorhome. The driver cab is separate from the living area but connected to it. Typical length 5.5–7 m.

    Advantages:

  • Good space-to-weight ratio
  • Usually under 3,500 kg — category B is enough
  • Suitable for couples and families with 1–2 children

  • Disadvantages:

  • Less sleeping space than an alcove
  • Not as luxurious as a fully integrated model

  • The Bürstner T 726 G — our model — is a semi-integrated motorhome.

    3. Alcove motorhome

An alcove is a type where there is an additional sleeping area above the driver cab (a bunk-style berth). You recognise them by the characteristic "hump" above the front section.

    Advantages:

  • Most sleeping berths (up to 5–6 people)
  • Excellent for families with children
  • Spacious interior

  • Disadvantages:

  • Usually over 3,500 kg — category C1 required
  • Difficult to manoeuvre in towns
  • Higher fuel consumption

  • 4. Fully integrated motorhome

The most luxurious type — the driver cab is fully incorporated into the bodywork. The result is an elegant interior without the "truck cab" look.

    Advantages:

  • Highest comfort level
  • Flush toilet, large kitchen
  • Large sleeping space

  • Disadvantages:

  • Most expensive to rent and buy
  • Usually over 3,500 kg
  • Difficult to park

  • 5. Caravan (trailer)

A caravan is not a motorhome — it is a trailer you tow behind a car. A cheaper option, but you need a suitable towing vehicle and a B96 or E category licence for heavier combinations.

    Advantages:

  • Cheaper than a motorhome
  • You can unhitch the car and drive without the caravan

  • Disadvantages:

  • More demanding driving (towing)
  • You need a powerful car
  • Special licence required for heavier combinations

Why does GetFar rent semi-integrated and not alcove motorhomes?

It is a deliberate decision. The semi-integrated Bürstner T 726 G weighs under 3,500 kg, which means:

  • **Category B is enough** — most adult drivers can drive it straight away
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Easier parking
  • Suitable for 2–4 people (the typical road trip group)

  • For most customers, a semi-integrated motorhome is the ideal compromise between comfort and practicality.
