Where to camp wild in Slovakia legally — rules, places and tips

Rules for camping outside official campsites in Slovakia in 2026. What is legal, where you can park up, national parks and the Park4Night app.

The freedom of a motorhome — park where you want

One of the biggest advantages of a motorhome over a hotel is freedom. You don't need to book accommodation, you don't need to arrive by 10pm, and you don't need to pay 80 EUR a night. But what exactly are you allowed to do in Slovakia? Where can you camp wild and where does a fine await you?

The legal situation in Slovakia

Camping outside official campsites in Slovakia is not explicitly prohibited by a single national law — however, several regulations apply that you need to know:

**Land law:** Private land is off-limits without the owner's consent. State and municipal land operates under a different regime. Public space (car park, roadside) is generally permitted for short stops.

**Forest law:** Camping in forests is prohibited unless the municipality or forest manager designates otherwise. Many municipalities in tourist areas have designated spots.

**Nature protection law:** Nature parks and Protected Landscape Areas (CHKO) have restrictions — read signs at entrances carefully. National parks generally have zero tolerance.

What is permitted in practice

**Short overnight stop on public space:** In practice many caravanners use the "1 night tolerance" rule — stop, sleep, leave in the morning. This is not guaranteed by law, but in conflict-free locations (away from town centres, a reasonable distance from homes) it works without problems.

**Stellplatz / Wohnmobilstellplatz:** Dedicated motorhome parking spots are less widespread in Slovakia than in Austria or Germany, but their numbers are growing. Paid and free options exist. They often have basic facilities (drinking water, waste water disposal).

**Car parks at hiking trailheads:** Public car parks at entrances to Malá Fatra, Pieniny, Muránska planina national parks — parking is permitted here, but leaving the vehicle to camp is not always allowed.

Where camping is prohibited

  • **National parks (NP):** NP Tatry, NP Pieniny, NP Muránska planina — strict ban on camping outside official sites. Fines up to 3,300 EUR.
  • **CHKO with special regime:** Some Protected Landscape Areas ban camping in zone I and II.
  • **Forests during fire ban period:** In summer (fire risk) forests may be closed.
  • **Private land:** Without written owner consent — always prohibited.

  • Best spots for wild camping

  • **Chocske vrchy:** less visited, nice plateaus with views, tolerant local authorities
  • **Low Tatras (outside NP zone):** the route between Brezno and Heľpa, side valleys near Jasná — outside the NP core
  • **White Carpathians:** the Slovak/Czech border area, easy terrain, beautiful meadows, minimal tourists
  • **Liptovská Mara area:** large reservoir, hiking trails, free parking by the dam

  • Apps to use

**Park4Night** is THE app for caravanners. Filter by Slovakia, category "free spots", ratings from other caravanners, photos. The basic version is free, premium (4 EUR/year) unlocks offline maps.

**iOverlander** — a community app originally focused on overlanding. Fewer entries for Slovakia, but useful in border areas.

**Google Maps satellite view** — good old method. Find a remote car park, check the terrain, verify access.

    Practical tips

  • **Don't stay in the same spot two nights in a row** — reduces risk of conflict with landowners or local police
  • **Don't leave a mess** — if you find a spot littered with rubbish, don't add to it. Leave no trace.
  • **Tank grey water** — never pour waste water (grey water) into nature. Tank it at campsites or Stellplatz stations (often free)
  • **Take rubbish with you** — in towns use public bins or recycling containers

  • Comparison with other countries

    | Country | Wild camping |

    |---|---|

    | Norway | Legal everywhere (Allemannsretten) — 48h per spot |

    | Slovakia | Tolerated on public spaces (1 night) |

    | Croatia | Permitted at designated spots, otherwise banned |

    | Austria | Essentially banned except some federal states |

    | Germany | Generally banned in forests, tolerated in car parks |
