Lake Neusiedl by motorhome — the perfect first weekend trip from Bratislava

Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee) is just 60 km from Bratislava — ideal for a first motorhome trip. Campsites, cycling routes, wine and Austrian charm.

Lake Neusiedl — the closest piece of abroad

Just 60 km from Bratislava lies one of the most beautiful lakes in Central Europe — Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee). A UNESCO World Heritage Site, steppe landscape, white storks, vineyards and small Austrian towns. For a first motorhome trip it is the ideal destination — close, accessible and full of things to do.

---

How to get there

From Bratislava it is ~60 km by motorway — D2 to the border, then D4 or a local road towards Neusiedl am See. Driving time: approximately 50 minutes.

**Tip:** Austrian motorways (marked A) require a vignette. Local roads (marked B or unmarked) around the lake are free. A 10-day vignette costs approximately 9.90 EUR and can be bought at the first Austrian petrol station.

Campsites around the lake

Camping Mörbisch am See

One of the most popular campsites in the entire region. Situated directly on the lake shore, large green area, motorhome pitches with electric hookup, showers and sanitary facilities of European standard. Mörbisch is also known for its operetta festival (Seefestspiele) in July and August.

Camping Rust

Rust is the "stork town" — dozens of storks nest on the rooftops. The campsite is in the quiet part of town, close to both the centre and the lake. Rust is also a renowned wine-making centre — Ruster Ausbruch wines are internationally acclaimed.

Camping Podersdorf am See

The largest campsite on the lake shore. Floating jetty, paddleboard and boat hire, excellent facilities. Podersdorf is on the windward side of the lake — popular with windsurfers and kiteboarders.

What to do at Lake Neusiedl

Cycling routes

A ~120 km cycling path runs all the way around the lake (Neusiedlersee Radweg). The route is flat, well signposted and suitable for the whole family. Bikes can be hired in Neusiedl am See or Podersdorf.

Swimming and water sports

The lake is only 1–2 metres deep and warms to 25–28°C in summer. Sandy bottom, no currents, ideal for children. Windsurfing and kitesurfing at Podersdorf are legendary — conditions are among the best in Europe.

Vineyard visits

Burgenland is wine country. The area around Lake Neusiedl produces excellent white wines (Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling) and the unique dessert wine Ruster Ausbruch.

Stop at a Heuriger (Austrian wine tavern) — a glass of wine direct from the producer, homemade spreads and bread, view over the vineyards. This is the authentic Austrian experience.

Rust — stork church and UNESCO centre

The small town of Rust is one of the most beautiful in all of Burgenland. Historic centre, Gothic church, and a stork's nest on every rooftop. Rust is listed as a UNESCO site as part of the Fertő/Neusiedlersee cultural landscape.

Schloss Esterházy (Eisenstadt)

30 minutes from the lake lies Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland. Here stands the magnificent Baroque Schloss Esterházy — the Haydn palace (where Joseph Haydn spent most of his career). Guided palace tours are available.

Practical tips

  • **Park4Night:** Around the lake you will find several Stellplätze (legal motorhome parking areas, not wild camping)
  • **Austrian vignette:** Required on motorways. Not needed on roads around the lake.
  • **Perfect pairing:** Combining a motorhome with bikes is ideal at Lake Neusiedl
  • **Dogs:** Most campsites welcome dogs but they must be kept on a lead
