Top 5 weekend motorhome routes from Bratislava

Planning a weekend motorhome trip from Bratislava? Here are 5 of the best routes — Neusiedlersee, Wiener Wald, Kremnica and Slovak Karst. With estimated distances and campsites.

Bratislava — the ideal motorhome starting point

Bratislava has one great advantage — within 2 hours of driving you can be in three different countries. Austria, Hungary and Slovakia converge here and each direction offers something different. For motorhomers it is a paradise.

Here are the 5 best routes we recommend for a weekend trip.

---

Route 1: Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee) — 60 km

**Ideal for:** first trip, couples, cyclists, families with young children

Lake Neusiedl is the closest foreign destination from Bratislava — just 60 km along the D2 and D4 motorways towards Austria. It is a shallow steppe lake on the UNESCO World Heritage List, surrounded by vineyards, reed beds and small Austrian towns.

What to do:

  • Cycling routes around the whole lake (~120 km circuit, best done in sections)
  • Swimming and bathing (water is warm, only 1–2 m deep)
  • Wineries in the Burgenland region — Rust, Mörbisch, Neusiedl am See
  • Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt (30 min from the lake)

  • Recommended campsites:

  • Camping Mörbisch am See (right by the water, very popular)
  • Camping Podersdorf am See (larger, excellent location)

  • **Practical info:** Austrian motorway vignette is required for D-motorways (buy at a petrol station or online before travel). Communal roads around the lake are free.

Route 2: Vienna Woods (Wiener Wald) — 50 km

**Ideal for:** couples, hiking, peace and nature

The Vienna Woods is a protected landscape area starting literally on the edge of Vienna — and just 50 km from Bratislava. Dense beech forest, small villages, castles and Heiligenkreuz monastery create the perfect setting for a quiet weekend.

    What to do:

  • Hiking to Anninger (675 m above sea level, easy ascent)
  • Visit to Heiligenkreuz monastery (Cistercian monastery from the 12th century)
  • Baden bei Wien — thermal baths just 20 min from the forest
  • Wine in Gumpoldskirchen (village near the Vienna Woods, white Rotgipfler)

  • Recommended campsites:

  • Camping Klosterneuburg (by the Danube, 20 min from central Vienna)
  • Camping Wien West (urban location but quiet in the garden)

Route 3: Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica — 200 km

**Ideal for:** history lovers, families, photography

Kremnica is the highest-situated town in Slovakia and a historic mint that struck gold ducats. Banská Štiavnica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Slovakia's most beautiful towns.

    What to do:

  • Kremnica: Town castle, mining museum, Kremnica Mine
  • Banská Štiavnica: Old and New Castle, Calvary, Mining Museum
  • Lake Počúvadlianske jazero near Banská Štiavnica — natural swimming
  • SNP Heroes Trail — part of a popular mountain hiking route

  • Recommended campsites:

  • Kemp Štiavnické jazero (Počúvadlianske lake, quiet, by the water)
  • Autocamping Kremnica (simpler but well located)

  • **Driving time:** approximately 2 hours from Bratislava via D1 and R1.

    ---

Route 4: Slovak Karst and Dobšiná Ice Cave — 350 km

**Ideal for:** nature, caves, active recreation

The Slovak Karst is the largest karst complex in central Europe, on the UNESCO list. Its caves are among the most beautiful in Europe — and Dobšiná Ice Cave is one of the largest ice caves in the world.

    What to do:

  • Dobšiná Ice Cave (a must-visit)
  • Ochtinská Aragonite Cave (mineralogically unique)
  • Slovak Paradise — national park with ladders and waterfalls
  • Zádiel Canyon — a deep karst valley

  • Recommended campsites:

  • Kemp Dobšiná (basic, close to the cave)
  • Autocamping Dedinky (by the Palcmanská Maša reservoir)

  • **Driving time:** approximately 3.5 hours from Bratislava via D1.

    ---

Route 5: Pieniny and Slovak Paradise — 380 km

**Ideal for:** rafting, hiking, families with children

Pieniny is a small jewel on the Slovak-Polish border — and its main attraction is rafting down the Dunajec river on traditional wooden rafts. Nearby is Slovak Paradise with its ladder-assisted trails and Suchá Belá waterfall gorge.

    What to do:

  • Dunajec raft trip (Červený Kláštor to Szczawnica, 18 km)
  • Červený Kláštor — historic monastery by the river
  • Slovak Paradise — Suchá Belá gorge, Kláštorisko
  • Hrabušice — gateway to Slovak Paradise

  • Recommended campsites:

  • Kemp Dunajec Červený Kláštor (right by the river)
  • Kemp Hrabušice (next to Slovak Paradise)

  • **Driving time:** approximately 4 hours from Bratislava via D1 and R2/R4.

    Practical tips for weekend routes

**Fuel:** Always fill up before you leave. A motorhome uses approximately 10–12 litres of diesel per 100 km.

**Park4Night:** Free app with thousands of reviewed motorhome overnight spots.

**Toll systems:** In Slovakia you pay tolls for vehicles over 3.5 t via BezZastavenia.sk — our Bürstner is under this limit, so you pay no tolls on Slovak motorways. In Austria and the Czech Republic a vignette is required.
